So the mystery begins. What has happened? How is out there? Who will be next?
Set up as a digital treasure hunt for the family this was an excellent opportunity to try out some ideas. How could you provide an experience that combined a digital centred treasure hunt with a code breaking breakout box. Both these ideas I have played with separately but not together.
ActionBound is an app to create digital scavenger hunts. It is feature packed with quiz questions, multimedia inputs from both the designer and participants and gamification elements to build focus.
Although it had a loose story it was more about completing each of the tasks that the adventure presented. It was a mix of finding things as well as group activities performed and recorded on the app.
The adventure was a mix of ActionBound and a Breakout box. The app on a mobile device directed the teams (there were two teams of four) to the next task and sometimes gave digital clues. The aim was to unlock their groups black box. Preventing them from doing so was a chain and five locks which needed to be opened. The locks were a mix of number and letter combination locks as well as a key lock.
At the end there was a group activity which they had to record on the app telling what they thought happened. (Listen to the Introduction to get the setting).
